Continuing a battle that's been taking place in several other states, parents in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove say they want publications they call "pornography" removed from the high schools' libraries, according to WGN-TV.
At a Nov. 15 school board meeting, parents challenged at least three books in the high school library. One book, a graphic novel called Gender Queer: A Memoir, has caused national and local controversy.
After considering parent complaints, the district said it reviewed the intent of Gender Queer, an American Library Association Award Winner, and felt it meets its criteria for inclusion in their libraries.
Students have disagreed with parents, with the former saying the latter group is overreacting.
