After a series of events that encompassed everything from vandalism to meetings with village officials to a visit from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, LGBTQ+-owned Lake in the Hills business UpRising Bakery and Cafe finally held its all-ages drag show on Aug. 7, The Daily Herald reported.
"We're ready. We've been here since 2 [a.m.] prepping and cooking, and we can't wait," owner Corinna Sac said just as she got ready to open the doors for the sold-out Rise & Shine Brunch @ Brunch show featuring three performers in drag.
The event was originally slated to take place July 23, but an Alsip man allegedly vandalized the spot the previous night. Later, Lake in the Hills officials hold Sac she couldn't host events; however, things changed after the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois came to her defense.
Sac, who opened the bakery in November, said she plans to host additional special events there. |
