CHICAGO (January 27) — The Hon. Mary C. Marubio has been named the acting presiding judge of the Pretrial Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans said.

Marubio (who Windy City Times has noted is an out lesbian) has been a judge in the Pretrial Division since its creation in 2017, and has been a supervising judge since November 2021. Appointed an associate judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County in 2016, she was initially assigned to the First Municipal and then the Domestic Relations Divisions. She was elected a circuit judge in 2020.

Marubio replaces the Hon. David Navarro, who has been assigned by the Illinois Supreme Court to the First District Appellate Court.

"Judge Marubio has been a trusted and valuable leader in the Pretrial Division under Judge Navarro," Evans said. "I am confident that the Division will benefit under her leadership."

Marubio is a graduate of DePaul University College of Law and DePaul University. She has been a member of the Illinois Judicial Ethics Committee since 2016, a collaborative effort with the Illinois Judges Association (IJA), Illinois State Bar Association and Chicago Bar Association to answer any state judge's ethics questions and to publish written Advisory Ethics Opinions. The IJEC recently rewrote the Judicial Ethics Code and submitted it to the Illinois Supreme Court. It was accepted and went into effect Jan. 1, 2023.

Marubio has been on the IJA's board of directors since 2017, and has acted as co-chair on both the IJA's educational committee and media relations committee. She is past president of the Alliance of Illinois Judges and participated in the Illinois Supreme Court's Pretrial Task Force/Commission on Pretrial Practices. She also is a member of the International Association of LGBTQ+ judges and the LAGBAC.

Since 2022, Marubio has been an adjunct professor at DePaul's College of Law.

"I'm grateful to Judge Evans for this opportunity," Marubio said. "I'm excited to continue the mission of the Pretrial Division in ensuring fair and safe pretrial practices."
