On Sept. 15, Colorado Democratic Gov. Jared Polis wed longtime partner Marlon Reismarking the first same-sex marriage of a sitting U.S. governor, NPR reported.
Polis keeps making history. In 2018, Polis became the first openly gay man ever elected governor in the U.S. A decade earlier, he was the first openly gay man elected to the U.S. House.
As recently as 2014, same-sex marriage was prohibited in Colorado. The U.S Supreme Court legalized it across the country in 2015.
Polis and Reis, the state's first gentleman, decided to hold their wedding on a significant day to them personally: the 18th anniversary of their first date. And they held the Jewish ceremony at the University of Colorado in BoulderReis' alma mater.
According to the official Colorado governor's website, Reis is a freelance writer and animal-welfare advocate. In 2011 and 2014, respectively, Polis and Reis welcomed a son and daughter to their family, making them the first LGBTQ+ parents in the history of the U.S. Congress.
