On Aug. 17, the Chicago Sky relinquished a late leadand are now facing elimination from the playoffs.
The defending WNBA champions fell to the New York Liberty 98-91 at Wintrust Arena as the seventh seed scored 13 consecutive points to end the game and secure their first playoff win since 2015.
The Sky will return home on Saturday, Aug. 20, to face the New York Liberty in Game 2 of the first round of the WNBA Playoffs. The tipoff at Wintrust Arena is at 11 a.m. CT and the game will air on ESPN.
Kahleah Copper had 21 points to lead Chicago. Candace Parker recorded a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds), making her second all-time in playoff double-doubles. Courtney Vandersloot also had 10 assists for the Sky.
"We sort of panicked," Sky forward Azura Stevens said, according to The Chicago Tribune. "We knew we were down and we were trying to get back. I feel like we haven't panicked all year, but tonight we might have a little bit, which is uncharacteristic for us."
New York has a chance to clinch a spot in Round 2 of the WNBA Playoffs with a win on Saturday. If the series is tied 1-1 after Saturday's contest, the teams will meet for a winner-takes-all Game 3 on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Yan Gomes hit a tie-breaking single in the seventh inning against his former team and the Chicago Cubs (49-67) beat the host Washington Nationals (39-80) 3-2 on Aug. 17 to win the three-game series, per ESPN.
P.J. Higgins homered and Reyes had two doubles for Chicago, which has won four straight series.
On Aug. 18, the Cubs will be at Baltimore in the makeup of a game rained out on June 8.
Framber Valdez threw solid seven innings, Yordan Alvarez drove in a run and scored one and the Houston Astros (76-43) beat the Chicago White Sox (61-57) 3-2 on Aug. 17, ending Chicago's five-game winning streak, ESPN noted.
The Astros, who lead the AL West, hung on after squandering eighth-inning leads in the first two games of the series. The White Sox trail AL Central-leading Cleveland by two games.
The teams conclude their series at Guaranteed Rate Field on Thursday, Aug. 18.
