Chicago — In 2000, Windy City Times established an award to acknowledge the young movers and shakers of the GLBT community: the 30 Under 30 Awards. Thirty young activists, journalists, students, HIV/AIDS volunteers and performers each under the age of 30 were honored for their achievements in moving the GLBT community forward. Since that time over 150 awardees have been honored. Six years later in 2006 another 30 will get their place in 30 Under 30 history.
Nominations are currently being sought by Windy City Media Group. Nominees should be under 30 years of age as of June 30, 2006 and should have worked to make a change either at their school, in their community or in the world as a whole regarding Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Issues, Entertainment, Politics, Health, etc.
Individuals themselves, organizations, co-workers, etc. can nominate a person by sending an email or fax to WCMG. The nomination should be 100 words or less and should state what achievements or contributions their nominee has made. The nomination should also include the nominator's name and contact information as well as the full contact information of the nominee. Those nominations can be faxed to Andrew Davis at 773-871-7609 ( fax ) or emailed to Andrew@WindyCityMediaGroup.com .
Two honorees from last year included Sapna Kumar, 30, a lesbian comic who was a Top 20 finalist in Chicago for Oxygen Network's 'Girls Behaving Badly' and Moises Villada, 21, president of RU Proud, Roosevelt University's LGBTQA student group. Honorees from 2005 are not eligible for the 2006 30 Under 30 awards. Those honored prior to 2005 are still eligible.
The celebration to be held in May ( details to come at a later date ) is headed by Windy City Times newspaper and co-hosted with AIDS Foundation of Chicago, Lesbian Community Cancer Project and Chicago House.
